Recipe: Make your own Laundry Soap
Try using your favorite (uncolored) soap to make your own laundry soap. I've been using
this recipe for a while with good success in the washer. It is tolerated well by my kids with
sensitive skin.
1/3 cup shredded soap (cheese grater works fine)
1/2 cup washing soda (sodium carbonate - in laundry aisle)
1/2 cup borax powder (in laundry aisle)
2 clean milk jugs or re-use an old (bulk size) plastic detergent container
Water
essential oils (optional)
Basic H2 from Shaklee (optional organic cleaner - I put in a tablespoon or so)
Place grated soap and 6 cups of water in a sauce pan. Heat until soap is melted. Add the
washing soda and borax and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat . Pour 4 cups hot water
into new soap containers (either 2 cups into each milk jug or 4 cups into 1 large container).
Add soap mixture to containers. Add essential oils and Basic H2 if desired. Fill containers
with water. Stir and let sit 24 hours until gelled. Makes about 2 gallons.
Formula will not be completely smooth - I just shake up the jug before I pour it out.
Use about a 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
This is a gentle laundry soap and very economical (even with the EOs and Basic H).
You will still need to use a stain remover on stains.
Try vinegar as a natural fabric softener and for added cost savings.
